Invermay Cross |
Fragment of the Invermay Cross
Four of the fragments of sculpture displayed at Forteviot Church come from the Invermay Cross. The base also survives in a field at Invermay, close to where it originally stood over 1,000 years ago. The cross was broken into fragments at the end of the 18th century.
The surviving traces of figurative imagery recall scenes on Constantine’s Cross. The size and solidity perhaps favour Invermay having been a cross-slab, similar to Gask, rather than a free-standing cross similar to Constantine’s Cross. The form suggests an 8th or 9th century date. |

Sometimes took a salmon hame
Hidden in their wellies
Secrets in the River Tay
When you hide yer fish away
Can you lean under your boat

Forteviot Cross - Lower Section |
Forteviot Cross - Lower Section
The section of lower shaft of the Forteviot Cross is richly carved, including an arrangement of fabulous animals in which one bites a large snake, which also forms the tail of another large animal. This image was probably intended to evoke a sense of Christian triumph over sin.
The size and style of the fragments suggest that they are more likely to belong to a free-standing cross rather than a cross-slab. |

Forteviot Stone - Upper Section
The upper portion, with its single imperial rider, has a strong affinity with the rider on Constantine’s Cross, and is placed in the same position at the top of the shaft of the cross.
The size and style of the fragments suggest that they are more likely to belong to a free-standing cross rather than a cross-slab. |

Forteviot Ring Cross |
Forteviot Ring Cross
This fragment of sculpture was once part of a ringheaded, free-standing cross, a form of cross particularly associated with the West Coast of Scotland (notably Iona) and with Ireland. The fragment derives from one of the arms of the cross head, with a stub of the ring projecting from one face. The form suggests a 10th century date. The depth and precision of the carving of this fragment show a high level of artistic ability. The short tenon shows that the cross was constructed of several pieces of stone, a challenging method developed in Iona. These stylistic and technical links reinforce the connection with the centre of the cult of St Columba.
The decorative motif known as ‘key-pattern’, originated in the Mediterranean world where it is linked to mazes. The Insular Celtic artists enlivened it by placing it on a diagonal grid. The Picts were particularly attached to the motif and produced the most complex designs. |

Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park |
Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park has cliffs, a fake ruin, an arboretum with unusual trees, lots of legends, an iron age fort – and great views.
In the 1800s local landowners went on holiday to the River Rhine in Germany and saw lots of ruined castles there. They decided that Kinnoull Hill needed its own ruin overlooking the River Tay – and built a brand new ruin, Kinnoull Tower.
Here be dragons! Did you know that in the 6th century St Serf killed a dragon on Kinnoull Hill? The cave where it lived is still here, high up on Kinnoull Crags. It’s called the Dragon Hole.
Walk in the footsteps of royalty! In the old days kings and queens travelled over Kinnoull Hill to Scone to be crowned. The route is called the Coronation Path to this day.
Volcano alert! At Corsiehill Quarry you can see where lava streams from a volcano cooled, as well as mineral crystals and geometric columns. |
